How to Think 'Safety First'

· Geriatrics Care Planning

In our last post, we discussed what to do when your loved one says they’re dizzy. Now I want to talk about why safety is the first concern- I know you think it's a no-brainer but I'm going somewhere with this, so hear me out.

Imagine if your loved one trips and breaks a hip—it might mean a long stay in the hospital or even moving to a nursing home. That’s why thinking about their safety may be the right first step. But you can make some changes today to ensure safety overall rather than wait for trouble to come to you.
Check for slippery or dog-eared rugs: If they could trip someone, it’s best to get rid of them.
Brighten up their home: especially in hallways and bathrooms.
Clear the way: You'll be surprised how often people bump their pinky toe on furniture rushing to the bathroom! Move things like boxes or furniture out of walking paths so it’s easy to get around.
Of course, there are no guarantees but if you plan you can intervene before a catastrophic outcome.

Have you had to make small or big changes to keep your loved one safe?

Did your loved one suffer a bad outcome? How did this change things for your family?

Share your experience so we all grow.

Wishing you peace of mind,

Chidimma
