Managing Spring Fatigue in Older Adults

broken image

While spring is a season of renewal, many seniors experience unexpected fatigue during this time. This phenomenon, known as spring fatigue, is often caused by shifting daylight hours, seasonal allergies, and metabolic changes as the body adapts to warmer weather.

A Story of Spring Fatigue

Mr. Jenkins, a 78-year-old retired teacher, used to love spring. But each year, he noticed that instead of feeling energized by the season, he felt more tired than usual. Despite sleeping well, he struggled with afternoon drowsiness and found himself less motivated to go outside. His doctor explained that spring fatigue is real and gave him strategies to adjust his routine.

Why Does Spring Fatigue Happen?

1. Changing Daylight Patterns

Longer daylight hours disrupt the body’s internal clock, making it harder to fall asleep or wake up at the right times.

2. Allergies and Inflammation

Increased pollen levels can cause nasal congestion, watery eyes, and breathing difficulties, making sleep less restful.

3. Nutritional Shifts

Many people eat lighter meals in spring, which may lead to lower iron and protein intake, contributing to tiredness.

4. Dehydration

Warmer temperatures cause the body to lose more fluids, but many seniors don’t drink enough water due to reduced thirst signals.

5 Ways to Combat Spring Fatigue

1. Stick to a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Even with longer daylight hours, go to bed and wake up at the same time each day to regulate your circadian rhythm.

2. Increase Iron and Protein Intake

Eat iron-rich foods like spinach, beans, and lean meats to maintain energy levels.

3. Hydrate More Than Usual

Aim for at least 6-8 glasses of water per day to prevent dehydration-related fatigue.

4. Get Morning Sunlight

Exposing yourself to natural light in the morning helps reset your internal clock and improves energy levels.

5. Adjust Allergy Medications if Necessary

Some antihistamines cause drowsiness. Consult a doctor for non-drowsy alternatives.

Conclusion

Spring fatigue is temporary, but small changes in sleep, diet, and hydration can make a huge difference.
